Honorable Mention
Me
by Joan Young

I am special
I am unique
I’m just like you
You’re just like me

We’re the same; yet different
In our own distinct way
It’s the diversity that sparks interest
When hearing what others say

I want to share my story
To enlighten those unaware
Of what lurks inside my existence
And is constantly waiting there

It won’t harm or attack you
You can’t contract it you see
It’s not after you
It’s already taken me

You won’t recognize it
My body looks healthy and strong
There’s nothing to detect its presence
I smile like nothing’s wrong

If love could have prevented it
Or if love could make it leave
I never would have had it
And from its clutch I would be free

But it doesn’t play fair
It has no moral rule
It’s here to take control
Bringing unbearable pain so cruel

During this time you won’t see me
I withdraw in a dark retreat
Again, I’m in its grip
And it’s got me off my feet

I hide my face in a pillow
While grasping my painful head
Trying to ease the internal explosion
Of blood vessels and brains, I dread

Lights and sound increase the intensity
Of this ravaging storm out of control
My stomach, sickened with nausea
Will momentarily release its load

Don’t talk, don’t breathe
Don’t make a sound
Help me escape this internal prison
In which I’m so deeply bound

Release me from this body
And set my spirit free
What’s the point of living
If this is how it’s got to be?

Weakened from this ordeal
I lie still and gently breathe
Oh how much longer
Before I feel the pain ease?

It’s got me where it wants me
Completely under its control
It may overtake this body
But it will never get my soul

There’s countless people out there
Who, like me, have this pain
You’ve just been introduced
To our disease, “Migraine”
